# Trade shifts are squeezing margins. Here's how to stay a step ahead.

Tariffs and trade shifts are rippling through supply chains, and they land on the P&L as higher input costs, price increases and tighter margins. For a consumer goods team the challenge isn't only reacting. It's seeing the risk early enough to choose your response.

## 1. Know where the exposure sits

Not every SKU, retailer or pack carries the same risk. Start with a clear view of margin by product and by retailer, so you know which lines can absorb a cost increase and which can't.

## 2. Model the price before you move it

A price increase lands differently in every retailer and against every competitor. Look at price elasticity, price gaps to competitors and own label, and what happened the last time prices moved, before you take it to the buyer.

## 3. Make every promotion pay its way

When margins are tight, promotions that only move volume between your own products, or subsidise sales you'd have made anyway, are the first place to look. Split each promotion into base and incremental volume and compare mechanics on return per euro.

## 4. Reallocate, don't just cut

Trade spend moved from weak promotions to strong ones, or from a struggling retailer to a growing one, protects revenue without raising the budget.
